Cy-Creek Linebacker Named Touchdown Club’s Top Defensive Player

Cy-Creek High School senior linebacker Josh White was named the Touchdown Club of Houston’s 2019 Defensive Player of the Year, winning the honor among 10 finalists in Greater Houston at a ceremony at the Bayou City Event Center. White, a three-year starter, helped lead the Cougars to a second consecutive appearance in the Division II-6A Region III championship game. He was also honored by the Touchdown Club as part of its 2019 UIL High School Preseason Team and recently earned his second consecutive District 17-6A Defensive MVP.

Cypress Christian Senior Swimmer Qualifies for Olympic Trials

Elliott Jones, a senior at Cypress Christian School qualified for the Olympic Trials with a qualifying time of 2:02.88 in the 200-meter backstroke. The swimmer is already committed to Auburn University, but before leaving high school he will defend his TAPPS state titles from the last two seasons. Elliott swims year-round for Premier Aquatics of Klein (PACK) and is a USA Swimming Scholastic All-American.

CFISD Students Placed in Houston Fire Prevention Poster Contest

Nine CFISD students placed in the 45th annual Houston Fire Prevention Poster Contest. Copeland fifth-grade student Sofia Nathani’s poster (shown above) won second place overall, receiving a $200 cash prize. Copeland students Aileen Pavon (5th) and Alfie Robinson-Powell (K) each won second place, Salina Khamly (4th) and Claire Jones (3rd) each placed third, and Eliana Guevara (2nd) placed first in their age divisions. Spillane sixth-grade students Audrey Szilagyi, Chloe Moon, and Jacob Herred received first-, second- and third-place, respectively.

Salyards MS Student Won National Red Ribbon Week Photo Contest

Salyards Middle School eighth grade student Ashley Trapp won the Region 4 Red Ribbon Week photo contest hosted by the National Family Partnership. The contest is held in conjunction with the national celebration of Red Ribbon week. The contest invites schools across the country to submit photos that incorporate the year’s theme, which was “Send a Message, Stay Drug Free” in 2019. Trapp’s submission shown above received the most votes in Region 4.

Cy-Woods HS Seniors Place in National AVP Competition

Cypress Woods High School seniors Zachary Stickle, Ralph Garrett and Matthew Melancon earned a Sports Feature Story Honorable Mention award in the Student Television Network (STN) Challenge. The trio, who have taken audio visual production (AVP) classes since sophomore year, had six days to complete the challenge. Stickle, Garrett and Melancon received the prompt, developed the story, shot the video and then edited and submitted the piece all in a week’s time.. LSC-CyFair Engineering Program Students Win 4th Statewide Design Challenge

Lone Star College-CyFair two student engineering teams took first- and fourth-place overall in the Top Design Team category at the Texas Space Grant Consortium (TSGC) Fall 2019 Design Challenge. Team C.R.A.T.E.R. (Cultivating, Retrieving, Analyzing and Testing Experimental Rocks) also won first in Best Peer Review and second in Best Poster and Best Oral Presentation. Team C.O.S.M.O.S. (Collecting and Obtaining Scientific Moon Objects and Specimens) also won third in Best Poster and fifth in Best Peer Review. Both teams were among the top teams in Best Model/Display. The wins earned the teams’ 11 students $8,000 in scholarships and represents LSC-CyFair’s fourth time TSGC challenge win. This spring both teams will formally manufacture prototypes of their tools in metal and put their designs to the test at NASA’s Johnson Space Center. In conjunction with TSGC, teams participate in the NASA Micro-g NExT Program. LSC-CyFair had two teams among 19 teams statewide presenting their work at TSCG, and both teams advanced to the next level of the nationwide Micro-g NExT Design Challenge.
