Houston Community Raises $2 Million for Boys & Girls Country
On Wednesday, Oct. 30 the annual Heritage Award Dinner benefiting Boys and Girls Country (BGC) of Houston raised over $2 million toward providing a loving home and teaching parents for children who come from families in crisis. Hosted at the Hilton Americas Hotel, the event featured stories of the impact the charity makes on children’s lives, a gourmet dinner, silent and live auctions and entertainment by Jeff Foxworthy. The event also honored the philanthropy of the Scianna family who invest their time, talent and treasure in various community organizations like Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation, Waller Area Chamber of Commerce, the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, Reach Unlimited and others. Chuck has served on BGC board of directors, and the entire family has been involved for more than a decade with Spring Festival and sponsoring one of the cottages. (BGC) has cared for more than 1500 children and young adults in need providing loving and nurturing Christian home environment, raising them to become self-sustaining and contributing adults. CFISD Schools Salute Service Men and Women on Veterans Day
CFISD schools held Veterans Day celebrations honoring retired and active service men and women, during the first two weeks of November. Veterans and families throughout the Cy-Fair community were invited to campuses to attend the ceremonies and touching tributes. Cy-Creek’s program was especially poignant, holding a brief ceremony placing a wreath at its Fallen Warriors Memorial Wall, which honors Cpl. Scott Larson (class of 2000) and Spc. Scott McIntosh (2001), two graduates who gave the ultimate sacrifice in serving their country.
CFISD Volleyball Players Earn All-District 17-6A honors
District 17-6A volleyball coaches selected the All-District 17-6A volleyball team following the conclusion of each team’s 2019 season. Cy-Fair junior Beka Portalatin was named District MVP, while fellow Bobcat senior Lauryn Bourné was named Outstanding Hitter. Cy-Falls senior Morgan Nix was named Outstanding Defensive Player, while fellow Golden Eagles junior Laila Collins and senior Yasmin Mack were named Outstanding Blocker and Newcomer of the Year. Cy-Fair Head Coach Donna Benotti was named Coach of the Year after leading the Bobcats to the regional final in the Class 6A playoffs.
Hairgrove ES Student Author Published in Annual iWRITE Anthology
Hairgrove fourth grader Natalia Varela was among 100 student authors and illustrators honored at the 10th anniversary iWRITE Luncheon & Book Signing, which aims to promote iWRITE’s mission to build student confidence through writing. Her short story, “Cindy and the Deathly Spider,” was featured among the other stories, poems and illustrations in iWRITE’s 10th edition of the anthology, “I Write Short Stories by Kids for Kids.” Varela’s story featured, Cindy, a well-traveled superhero charged with saving the world from a spider. iWRITE.org
Jersey Village HS Dance, Cheer Teams Perform with Texans Cheerleaders
Jersey Village Gold Dusters and cheerleaders joined other Houston-area high school dance teams for an all-star performance with the Texans cheerleaders during the game against the Oakland Raiders. The teams spent two weeks of extra practice in the morning to prepare for the performance at NRG Stadium. The experience is one they’ll never forget as they performed in front of 71,893 fans who cheered them on.
Kelsey-Seybold Opens Multispecialty Care Center in Cypress
Kelsey-Seybold opened a new, state-of-the-art, standalone medical clinic in the Cypress area, replacing the existing Cypress Clinic. The four-story clinic is located on Wortham Center Drive in the heart of the CFISD. The facility is triple the square footage of the old clinic, at 72,000 square feet, and has room to grow to up to 35 physicians, expanding services offered. Patients will have access to physicians specializing in Family Medicine, Internal Medicine, Pediatrics, Pulmonary Medicine, Endocrinology, Dermatology, OB/GYN, Gastroenterology, Optometry, Ophthalmology, Podiatry, and Orthopedics. Eleven Student Cadets Join CFISD Police Explorer Post
The CFISD Police Department inducted 11 cadets into its second class of Explorer Post No. 0112. Part of the Learning for Life Corporation’s Exploring program, the post offers CFISD high school students who are interested in a career in law enforcement or a related field, training, classroom instruction, competitions and guidance from CFISD police officers. The cadets join nine Advanced Explorers, who completed the inaugural year of the program in 2018-2019.
